Wait, isn't too much salt bad for you?

Updated: Oct 30, 2022

We've all heard how, like sugar and fat, salt is killing us. Worried about high blood pressure and heart problems, many Canadians are trying to reduce their salt consumption, which is said to be far too high on average. And then along we come, telling you to bathe in the stuff because it gets absorbed into the skin and it's good for you?!

Natural bathing salts

Just to recap...Epsom salt isn't salt.

Epsom salts are magnesium sulfate, not salt. And while magnesium is supposed to occur naturally in many foods, most of us aren't actually getting enough in our diets because years of industrial farming practices have severely depleted the soils of natural magnesium resources - and processing food removes even more of this essential mineral.

The symptoms of a magnesium deficiency include, ironically enough, high blood pressure, anxiety, hyperactivity and heart problems. Magnesium regulates hundreds of key enzymes in the body, enzymes we need to regulate essential body functions such as heart and nervous system function.

Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin and will boost the body's magnesium content, helping to detoxify the body as well.

But what about the actual sodium in SaltZ&Co bath salts? SaltZ&Co bath salts are a blend of 70% Epsom salts to 30% natural sea salts - but the latter, although also absorbed into the body when you bathe, isn't going to elevate blood pressure the way table salt does when ingested. Unlike taking in a substance through the stomach, where the body has no choice but to attempt to digest whatever is put in, the body only absorbs the needed amount of minerals and chemicals from salt - and sea salt contains far less sodium chloride than does table salt. What your body craves is the mineral content of salt as opposed to the sodium, so that is what it absorbs.

You can bathe in bath salts with confidence, knowing that you're doing something good for your body, mind and spirit! New to the joys of a good salt soak? Take $5 off any full size jar of bath salts by entering code HAPPY at checkout.
